The expanded small scale physical model(ESSPM) will be constructed from 216 5x10 ft foam panels on the LSU campus. The model is of the lower Mississippi River from Donaldsonville to the Gulf of Mexico.
When final construction is completed, the new model, nearly as large as an Olympic-size swimming pool, will enable researchers to study sediment diversion projects used to divert river water and sediment to replenish and help sustain the vanishing coastal wetlands in the region. Construction Tolerance: 1mm
Test Model: A test model is being constructed in Holden to develop the necessary methods for maintaining the construction tolerances. The model is being machined from foam blocks that are then assembled on the model support platform. Innovative construction techniques and high precision measurement techniques were developed for the model construction.
