We may be the oldest continuously operating hydraulics laboratory in North America, but we help clients around the world solve a wide range of flow problems. Our team routinely applies our expertise to many disciplines to come up with some pretty amazing designs and engineered solutions. One of those disciplines is process engineering.

According to Wikipedia, "Process engineering focuses on the design, operation, control, optimization and intensification of chemical, physical, and biological processes across a number of industries including: agricultural, biotechnical, chemical, food, material development, mining, nuclear, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical."

Our goal this year is to share more of our projects within these unique applications. We'll start with this newsletter and the story below.

U.S. catfish industry seeking ‘tangential expertise’ to tackle off-flavors

A team from Alden was recently interviewed for an article that appeared in Global Aquaculture Alliance. Why? Because they have identified a way to help eliminate off-flavors in farmed catfish. We'll share more on their innovation in the coming weeks. In the meantime, read the article for a "taste" of what's ahead.

Another client produced these short vignettes to showcase their technologies used for both upstream and downstream pharmaceutical production. Our team used CFD modeling to help the client pinpoint areas where performance could be maximized during the scale-up process in the technologies they highlight.

alden-2021-calendar

This week, members of our team will be participating virtually in the 2021 Oregon Chapter of the American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting, March 3-5, 2021

On Wednesday, March 31, Alden's Benjamin Mater is scheduled to discuss Design of a Nature-like Fishway Optimized using CFD Modeling during the 2021 Maine Sustainability & Water Conference. The presentation will be part of the session on Restoring Native Migratory Fish Passage at Stream Barriers. Get more details or register to attend here

And finally, next month, we'll be presenting at the Hydro+ Series, a yearlong source of free and informative content. Join us for Waterpower Hydro Basics: Natural Resource Stewardship: Instream Flows and Fish Passage. Visit www.hydroplusseries.com to learn more or sign up.

Project-Mercury-Manned-Space-Flight-4-cent-stamp-1-1

Did you know in the 1950's and 60's, Alden was called upon to test and analyze various components of space flight? Details of one project remain scant—testing of the Mercury space capsule. Larry Neale, then Assistant Director at the lab, remained tight-lipped with specifics, but was quoted as saying, "Well, we tested some exotic shapes. Would they float, how stable were they in water, how do you recover them?"
