Alden to Host First Ever Workshop Focusing Exclusively on Desalination Intake Structures

October 16th & 17th, 2008

A highly regarded and technically diverse group of desalination experts has been assembled to participate in the first Desalination Intake Solutions Workshop to be held at Alden Research Laboratory on October 16 and 17. With a projected increase in the construction and operation of desalination facilities, the objective of this timely workshop is to focus attention on state-of-the-art intake design, the potential effects of intakes on aquatic life and mitigation measures, the regulatory framework surrounding permitting and operation of such intakes, and the relative costs and construction techniques of various intake designs. This workshop seeks to bring together developers, regulators, public utilities, engineers, and biologists to share information that will help guide the environmentally-responsible and cost-effective design of desalination intake structures.
Industry leaders such as Tom Pankratz, Consultant and Editor of the Water Desalination Report, Tom Missimer of Schlumberger, Ned Taft, President, and Tim Hogan of Alden Research Laboratory, John Steinbeck of Tenera Environmental, Bill Dey of ASA Analysis and Communication, Henry Hunt of Ranney Collector Wells, and Alfredo Andres of Inima USA, are scheduled to address workshop attendees. Topics to be discussed include: adverse environmental impacts associated with water withdrawal, federal, state, and regional regulatory framework, intake alternatives (surface/subsurface), relative costs of different intakes, and case studies of existing desalination intakes.

In the words of Ned Taft, President of Alden: "As the first meeting ever to focus exclusively on desalination intake structures, this workshop promises to foster the exchange of invaluable information on the cost-effective and environmentally-friendly design of intakes for the desalination industry."
