Looking Back

Holden, MA - Aug 27, 2009 -
In 1994, Ned Taft officially became a full-time Alden employee.  His first project at Alden was an evaluation of a full-scale underwater strobe light system for repelling fish from an intake during pumpback operation.
Cage tests conducted in 1994 indicated that Atlantic salmon smolts can be repelled by strobe light.  Certain flash rates, light intensity, and color filters were shown to affect smolt response to strobe lights.  However, in practice, due to the complex flow patterns and high velocity currents at the proposed site, the ability for fish to respond to the strobe lights was severely diminished.

Because of the challenges presented by the complex geometry of the site, a recommendation was made to further study other possible behavioral or physical barriers using mathematical and physical modeling.  Further strobe light testing was also recommended for its potential use at various other sites.
