BWR ECCS Sump Strainer Workshop

September 14 – 16, 2010
Holden, Massachusetts

Few nuclear power industry regulatory issues have been as long-lived as the concern about ECCS sump strainer head loss during a postulated high energy line break, starting with the issuance of Unresolved Safety Issue (USI) A-43, published in 1979, all the way up to the issuance of Draft Regulatory Guide DG-1234 in July, 2010. While the BWR Owners Group, plant engineering teams, and fleet engineering groups are well aware of the urgency now associated with this issue, it has been difficult to find all of the relevant information, history, and perspective comprehensively disseminated.

Attendees of this educational workshop were able to network with, and hear presentations from industry veterans involved since the USI A-43 issuance, retired NRC staffers involved from the outset, vendors providing resolution services, and experienced plant project leads involved in the recent PWR strainer efforts. The event was designed to provide the full historical background together with information about modern resolution methodologies.
